Founded in 1971, Greenpeace now operates as 26 independent national/regional organisations in over 55 countries, making it collectively one of the largest environmental networks on Earth. At Greenpeace Australia Pacific (GPAP), we're not just a team; we're a movement. By joining us, you're not just taking a job – you're seizing an opportunity to make a real-world difference.

This is a full time, 18 month fixed term contract. Open to candidates Australia wide.

This role will join our incredible Program Department which is composed of campaigners, creative confrontation experts, digital specialists, advocacy, communications and more.

Our team is responsible for fighting for strong climate action and nature protection. Whether it’s preventing huge new gas mines, taking the fight of the Pacific to the world’s biggest stages, or advocating for solutions to replace harmful forms of economic activity, you’ll be joining a team who are working on campaigns we believe will make the world safer and more just.

THE ROLE

The COP31 Lead will lead and coordinate GPAP’s efforts on COP31 . The purpose of the role is to ensure we use the opportunity of COP31 to further our objectives of moving Australia to a fossil fuel phase out; empowering Pasifika voices; protecting forests and oceans; and driving climate justice.

In this role, you will develop, drive and coordinate strategy and policy for GPAP across the Greenpeace Network, the Australian Government, the Australia-Pacific Presidency (if confirmed) and the movement. This role will ensure the coordination and implementation of our campaign and engagement strategies to reach our objectives.

Reporting into the Head of Advocacy and in close collaboration with the Head of Pacific, this role will develop and deliver a political campaign strategy to help ensure the dynamism, ambition and successful coordination of all aspects in the lead up and during COP31.

Some of the core responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Drive the Australian Government to more ambition on climate action and climate justice
  • Effectively represent GPAP in both domestic and international strategy meetings and movement spaces
  • Collaborate with Greenpeace International (GPI) to ensure the Greenpeace strategy for COP31 is smart, effective and supports both regional and global climate goals
  • Develop and coordinate alignment on the policy outcomes we would like to see from the Australian Government leading up to COP31, and outcomes we want from COP31 itself
  • Partner closely with fundraising teams to understand and harness opportunities to support COP31 efforts
  • Work with the Engagement team to ensure an inspiring and comprehensive narrative about our COP31 objectives that is based on audience insights and drives people to engage in our work

This role will travel both domestically and internationally as required and on occasion, be required to work outside of office hours to accommodate colleagues in multiple timezones. You will be made aware of this with suitable notice and given Time in Lieu (TOIL) where appropriate.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

We are looking for someone who is highly engaged with the movement and can develop an incredible strategy to bring a whole group of people along with you to make it happen.

You’ll have a clear understanding of national political, cultural and economic power dynamics in the context of Australian and international climate politics and a passion for Pacific and global climate justice.

You’ll also have:

  • At least five (5) years’ professional experience in non-profit campaigning or political roles with a proven track record of developing and implementing strategic advocacy campaigns
  • At least three (3) years’ experience in international work (for example international development, working in the Pacific, working in global institutions, working in international organisations)
