Be bold. Be creative. Be part of the fight for a green and peaceful future.
At Greenpeace Australia Pacific (GPAP), we believe a better world is possible and we’re determined to make it real. We are an independent campaigning organisation, powered by people and creative action, taking on the biggest environmental and climate challenges of our time. Our priorities are:
- tackling climate change by stopping emissions from fossil fuel extraction at source; and
- protecting nature, including our oceans and forests, by stopping the largest sources of environmental destruction like industrial fishing and deforestation.
Whatever your role at GPAP, you’ll be part of something bigger: a passionate global movement that sparks action, holds decision‑makers to account, and drives lasting change for people and the planet. This is an opportunity to use your skills, creativity, and commitment to help shape a future worth fighting for.
NATURE POLICY LEAD
Role: Full time, 2 year Fixed Term Contract
Location: Flexible - Open to candidates Australia wide
THE TEAM
This role reports directly to the Head of Advocacy, however you’ll work in a high-energy, cross-functional environment alongside the Head of Nature and a team of campaign and program staff to turn sharp research and policy into winning campaign strategies.
As the technical "engine room" for our nature work, you will also collaborate with our Investigations team to expose environmental destruction and work closely with Fundraising to help tell the story of our impact to the supporters who make our independence possible. You aren’t just joining a local office; you are part of a Global network, regularly liaising with biodiversity experts and policy leads from Greenpeace International to ensure our local actions drive global change.
THE ROLE
We are looking for a sophisticated, bold, and strategic Nature Policy Lead to be the architect of our nature advocacy. This isn't just a policy and research role, it’s a leadership position designed to challenge the status quo and secure tangible protections for our forests and oceans.
As our Nature Policy Lead, you will bridge the gap between scientific urgency and political reality. You will be the expert voice representing Greenpeace in the halls of Parliament, corporate boardrooms, and with other external stakeholders
Key responsibilities include:
- Shape the Strategy: Provide the policy "teeth" for our major campaigns, ensuring our demands are scientifically robust and politically unignorable.
- High-Level Advocacy: Directly lobby Ministers, executives, and key stakeholders to adopt ambitious nature protections.
- Sector Leadership: Act as a key convener within the conservation sector, aligning NGOs and allies behind transformative policy goals.
- International Influence: Liaise with the global Greenpeace network to ensure Australian policy aligns with and leads international biodiversity standards.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
You are a seasoned policy expert and advocate who knows that facts are the foundation, but persuasion is the engine of change. You understand how power works in Australia and how to navigate the intersection of law, economics, and environment.
You’ll ideally also have:
- 5+ years of experience in non-profit policy or campaigning with a proven track record of winning policy outcomes.
- A thorough understanding of Australian and international biodiversity laws, politics and treaties, including Australia’s national nature law, the EPBC Act.
- Strong experience in working with a diverse range of people, stakeholders and audiences.
- The ability to write a technical submission in the morning and brief a national journalist in the afternoon.
- A commitment to peaceful, creative confrontation and a global perspective on environmental justice.
You are a collaborator who thrives in a diverse, global network, grounding your expert advocacy in a deep respect for people and a commitment to knowledge sharing. Beyond your policy expertise, you embody the Greenpeace spirit of peaceful, creative confrontation and possess the cross-cultural fluency needed to work respectfully across a wide range of sensitive contexts.
We recognise that sometimes the right person for a job is based on personal qualities and not just qualifications. If you are not sure whether you are qualified, we would strongly encourage you to make an inquiry or go ahead and apply.
WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU
- Be part of a globally respected brand: Work with one of the most influential names in the environmental NGO space, backed by five decades of courageous campaigning.
- Work-life balance you can rely on: A 35-hour work week, supported by GPAP’s integrity framework, plus generous leave options (including an additional week of paid leave between Christmas and New Year).

- A culture of belonging: Join a team that truly celebrates inclusivity, diversity, and a sense of community.
